(ERF) The Ethiopian government intends to inform the United States, Egypt and Sudan that it would no longer participate in the Great Renaissance Dam (GERD) Negotiation brokered by the US government and the World Bank. Ethiopia accuses the US government of showing partisanship towards Egypt and rejected the final agreement written by the US Treasury a few weeks ago.
Ethiopia intends to propose an alternative legal and technical document in the coming days. It will also announce to continue the next phase of the negotiation under the auspices of the Africa Union. Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed invited president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa to help mediate the talks over the Great Renaissance Dam ( GERD) when the latter assumed the chair of the African Union in Addis Ababa in February 2020. Abiy said that Ramaphosa was a good friend of both Egypt and Ethiopia and would play a significant role in achieving a win-win solution.
